INSTALLING

SITE YOUR NEST BOX SO THAT THE ENTRANCE IS SHELTERED FROM CLIMATIC CONDITIONS.   THE SOUTH-EAST SIDE OF THE TREE IS OFTEN THE MOST SUITABLE ASPECT.   THIS WILL PROTECT THE ANIMALS FROM WIND, RAIN AND EXCESSIVE HEAT.   NATURAL SHADE COVER ABOVE THE BOX WOULD ALSO BE USEFUL.

MOST NEST BOXES ARE BEST LOCATED AT LEAST THREE METRES ABOVE THE GROUND TO PREVENT VANDALISM AND PREDATION.   IF THE BOXES ARE LOCATED CLOSE TO YOUR HOUSE IT IS OKAY TO INSTALL THEM AROUND TWO METRES ABOVE THE GROUND, AS THIS ALLOWS EASIER ACCESS FOR YOU.   THE ANIMALS WILL STILL USE THEM AT THIS HEIGHT.

NEST BOXES ARE BEST FIXED BY:
1- DRIVING A LARGE NAIL (100-150 mm) INTO A TREE.
2- HANG THE BOX FROM THE HOLE IN THE TOP MOUNTING STRIP PROVIDED.
3- TO ENSURE THE BOX IS SECURED FIRMLY, DRIVE TWO 75mm NAILS EACH SIDE OF THE BOTTOM STRIP. THIS WILL STOP THE BOX FROM BLOWING AROUND AND FACILITATE REMOVAL. DO NOT DRIVE NAILS THROUGH THE BOTTOM STRIP.
PREFERABLY, USE GALVANIZED NAILS.

INSPECTING

THIS IS BEST ACHIEVED FROM A DISTANCE TO AVOID TOO MUCH DISTURBANCE OR THE ANIMAL DESERTING THE NEST BOX.   CONSTANT INSPECTIONS OF THE NEST BOX SHOULD ALSO BE AVOIDED.   BIRDS CAN BE OBSERVED DURING THE DAY AND NOCTURNAL ANIMALS CAN BE SEEN LEAVING THE NEST BOX AT DUSK.   IF CLOSE INSPECTION IS REQUIRED, PLAN A TIME WHEN THE PARENT ANIMALS HAVE LEFT TO FORAGE.
