SOMETIMES, NESTBOXES
WILL BE OCCUPIED BY UNWANTED PEST ANIMALS, BIRDS AND INSECTS. THE TYPE OF PEST PRESENT USUALLY RELATES TO THE HABITAT. IN
OPEN SITUATIONS, BIRDS SUCH AS STARLINGS, SPARROWS AND COMMON MYNAS CAN BE A PROBLEM. FORTUNATELY, NONE OF THESE BIRDS
WILL UTILISE FORESTED HABITAT. THEY ARE ALL INTRODUCED PESTS AND CAN BE HUMANELY DESTROYED. BLACK RATS WILL USE NEST BOXES,
BUT THIS IS RARE. PROBABLY THE WORST PEST IS THE FERAL BEE. THEY SWARM IN OCTOBER AND WILL TAKE OVER A NEST BOX. THEY CAN
BE DESTROYED WITH A GOOD BURST OF FLYSPRAY, BEST DONE DURING NIGHT TIME. NATIVE ANIMALS SUCH AS BIRDS OF PREY, HAWKS,FALCONS,
OWLS, GOANNAS ETC. MIGHT HELP THEMSELVES TO YOUR NEST BOX OCCUPANTS. THESE ARE ALL PROTECTED WILDLIFE AND
THIS TYPE OF PREDATION IS A NATURAL PROCESS. THEY MUST NOT BE HARMED. IF YOU REQUIRE ADVICE REGARDING PESTS, PLEASE CALL AND
I WILL TRY TO ADVISE AN APPROPRIATE COURSE OF ACTION. DEPT. OF SUSTAINABILITY AND ENVIRONMENT WILL PROVIDE
ADVICE OR HELP REGARDING PEST ANIMALS.
